# Exam Pattern

Understand how government exams are structured before you start your preparation.

## What Is an Exam Pattern?

The exam pattern is the structure of a recruitment exam. It tells you how many stages
there are, which subjects are asked, how many questions come, how marks are given
and how much time you get. Knowing the pattern helps you plan your study time, practise
in the right way and avoid surprises on exam day.

## What an Exam Pattern Usually Includes

 * **Mode of exam:** online (computer-based) or offline (pen and paper)
 * **Stages:** for example preliminary, main, skill test, physical test or interview
 * **Subjects and sections:** such as reasoning, quantitative aptitude, general
   awareness and language
 * **Number of questions and total marks** for each section
 * **Duration:** total time and any section-wise time limit
 * **Marking scheme:** marks for each correct answer and negative marking, if any
 * **Qualifying marks and cut-off:** the score needed to move to the next stage
 * **Language:** the languages in which the paper is set

## How to Read an Exam Pattern

 1. Open the **official notification** of the exam you want to apply for.
 2. Find the section called _Scheme of Examination_ or _Selection Process_.
 3. Note the number of stages and whether each stage is qualifying or counted for the
    final merit.
 4. Write down the subjects, number of questions, marks and time for every paper.
 5. Check if there is negative marking and how much.
 6. Match the pattern with the [syllabus](https://easydocflow.com/syllbus/) and plan
    your study schedule.

## Preparation Tips

 * Practise previous year papers and mock tests in the same pattern as the real
   exam.
 * Divide your time between sections according to their marks.
 * If there is negative marking, avoid random guessing.
 * Track your accuracy and speed, and work on your weak topics.
 * Prepare for later stages such as skill tests, physical tests or interviews in
   time.
